Brussels, November 19, 1999 (ICFTU OnLine): The following is a selection of next week's events. This selection has been prepared for the information of subscribers to the ICFTU's OnLine service, and does not necessarily reflect the position of the ICFTU.
Tuesday, November 23: "Organising in the 21st century: public sector unions for equal opportunities, social justice and trade union rights". This will be the theme of the 10th European regional conference of the Public Services International (PSI). The conference will take place in Budapest.
Wednesday November 24: The ICFTU's Steering Committee is meeting in Seattle (USA) and will be followed, on November 25-27 by the annual session of the ICFTU Executive Board. More than 100 trade union leaders from all five continents are expected to attend. The meetings will focus on preparations for the ICFTU's next world congress to be held in Durban (South Africa) next April.
Thursday, November 25: The first session of the ICFTU Executive Board will be devoted to celebrating the ICFTU's 50th anniversary. On this occasion AFL-CIO president John Sweeney will present the confederation with the George Meany/Lane Kirkland Award as a recognition for its contribution to the fight for human rights over the last 50 years.
Thursday November 25: The ICFTU-affiliated Hak-Is of Turkey is holding its 9th Congress in Ankara.
Sunday November 28: The ICFTU organises, on the eve of the ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), a major event in Seattle where trade union leaders will put forward their demands to the WTO. "Globalisation and Workers' Rights" will be the theme of the ICFTU event which will be addressed by Mike Moore, WTO Director General.
