Brussels, December 10 1998 (ICFTU OnLine): The following is a selection of next week's events. This selection has been prepared for the information of subscribers to the ICFTU's OnLine service, and does not necessarily reflect the position of the ICFTU.

Monday December 14: Presidential elections are due to be held in Guinea. President Lansana Conte, who came to power in 1984, is hopeful that the ruling Unity and Progress Party will be reelected.

Monday December 14: The World Trade Organisation’s African regional summit opens. It closes on Wednesday December 16.

Monday December 14: The ICFTU, repesented by its General Secretary Bill Jordan, and its regional organisation for Asia and the Pacific (APRO), will take part in the two day North Pacific trade union forum, to take place in Hong Kong.

Tuesday December 15: Greece’s General Confederation of Labour has announced a one day general strike in protest at the government’s austerity budget for 1999.

Tuesday December 15: The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) opens its two-day summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Wednesday December 16: A joint mission by the ICFTU and its regional organisation for the Americas, ORIT, led by ICFTU General Secretary Bill Jordan, is to spend three days in Cuba to renew contacts with the island’s trade union movement. An initial mission took place in 1996. It is the first visit by an ICFTU General Secretary to Cuba since Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.

Thursday December 17: The special committee of the Heads of State of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) is to meet in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. It seeks to contribute to the restoration of peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Friday December 18 and Saturday December 19: The Slovaks are due to vote in municipal elections.

Friday December 18 and Saturday December 19: The ICFTU-affiliated national trade union centre of Hungary, MSZOSZ, is to hold its congress in Budapest.
