Brussels, November 18 1998 (ICFTU OnLine): The following is a selection of next week's events. This selection has been prepared for the information of subscribers to the ICFTU's OnLine service, and does not necessarily reflect the position of the ICFTU.

Tuesday November 24: The ICFTU’s governing bodies begin four days of meetings in Elsinore (Denmark). The Steering Committee meets on November 24 and will be followed by the annual session of the Executive Board from November 25 to 27. The agenda will include preparations for the next ICFTU World Congress in 2000 and the trade union response to the world economic crisis. Juan Somavia who is to succeed Michel Hansenne as the head of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) next March is the special guest at this session hosted in Denmark by the Danish trade union federation (LO) which is celebrating its centenary this year.

Tuesday November 24: Representatives of the European Trade Union Confederation are to meet the leaders of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, to discuss the establishment of social dialogue.

Tuesday November 24: The Committee to Protect Journalists is to present its annual International Press Freedom Awards in New York.

Tuesday November 24: The European Policy Institute is organising a conference in Amsterdam on Labour Market Policy in Europe. The ETUC will send a representative.

Wednesday November 25: The five Law Lords, (members of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords who sit as the highest court of appeal), are due to announce their verdict concerning the appeal by the Spanish judges and the public prosecutor of the United Kingdom against the ruling by a British court that former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, arrested in London on October 16, should enjoy immunity as a former Head of State The Law Lords decision will help determine the UK’s response to Spain’s request for the General’s extradition, so that he can be put on trial there for crimes committed during the dictatorship. France and Switzerland have also called for his extradition and Belgium and Sweden are preparing to do the same.

Wednesday November 25: Chinese President Jiang Zemin is due to make an official visit to Japan.

Thursday November 26: The Canadian Human Rights Foundation is to hold a conference on "Universal Rights, Human Values: an Action Plan for Peace, Justice and Liberty". The conference coincides with the 50tth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (December 10).

Friday November 27: The 42 members of Kiribati’s (in the Pacific) parliament are due to elect a new President of the Republic.

Saturday November 28: South Korea and Japan are due to hold ministerial talks in Kogoshima (Japan).

Sunday November 29: Municipal elections are due to take place in the 682 Malian communes created under the terms of the new decentralisation act.

Sunday November 29: The opposition parties in Argentina (the Radical Civic Union and the Frepaso Solidarity Front) are due to announce their candidates for the Presidential election.
