Brussels, October 23, 1998 (ICFTU OnLine): The following is a selection of next week's events. This selection has been prepared for the information of subscribers to the ICFTU's OnLine service, and does not necessarily reflect the position of the ICFTU.
Monday October 26: The World Trade Organisations Trade and Environment Committee meets in Geneva to discuss links between the trade and environment agendas.
Monday October 26: The European Union is to begin discussions on social policy with Slovenia, one of the six countries about to join the European Union.
Tuesday October 27: Argentinian President Carlos Menem is to make an official visit to Great Britain. He is the first Argentinian President to visit Great Britain since President Frondizi in 1960 and, above all, since the Falklands/Malvinas war between the two countries in 1982. Mr. Menem is scheduled to meeting the British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Queen Elizabeth II.
Wednesday October 28: President Pastrana of Colombia is due to make an official visit to Washington where he will meet President Bill Clinton. This visit takes place just as the ICFTU has launched a worldwide campaign against Colomiba following the assassination on Tuesday October 20 of the vice-President of the United Workers Centre (CUT), José Ortega, who died after being shot in the head several times outside his home.
Thursday October 29: The 39th Congress of the
International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) opens in New Delhi. The Congress,
which will continue until November 5, will be preceded by the ITF Womens Conference.
Friday October 30: The South African government is due to hold an employment summit
for business, the trade unions, community associations and religious movements in an
attempt to resolve the unemployment problem. According to official figures, 37.6% of the
working-age population is unemployed.
Friday October 30: The 10th Congress of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions opens in Livingstone.
Saturday October 31: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission whose task was to shed light on the crimes perpetrated under the Apartheid Regime in South Africa is due to close. It is to be replaced by an Institute of Change, Memory and Reconciliation, although members of the Commission, which has heard over 20,000 witnesses, have called for its mandate to be prolonged.
